Algebra for Breakfast, yeah I never thought I would see those two words in a title, let alone a review title but here they are. Algebra for Breakfast is a math supplement program to help bring Algebra concepts to elementary students. Some kids and even parents cringe at the thought of algebra, so a program that is geared to young students to help ease the transition to algebra had my attention. Let me share with you our experience with Algebra for Breakfast using both of their levels, 3/4 and 5/6.
How does this program work?
Algebra for Breakfast is meant as a supplement program. That means that this program can not and should not be used as a kid’s only math curriculum. However, as a supplement it offers a ton.
- Math games using dice and cards
- Video Lessons
- Skip Counting CD
- AND Parent guidance videos and answer keys
With your paid membership to Algebra for Breakfast new lessons will be added to your account every 30 days. Lessons are as simple as having your child watch a video lesson with the manipulates in front of them, and then having them complete the worksheet/s for that lesson. Other lessons involve playing some math games with your child, but even those are easy and fun to set up. Your child moves through the lessons at their own pace.
So why choose to use this program?
This program is Hands-On. Every lesson has the kids picking up the blocks and problem solving with them, or playing math games. Because math typically is not handled with manipulates this just gives the kids another way to grasp the facts being taught. In the picture below you see my son blindfolded, trying to find the correct blocks to solve the problem and laying them out in front of him. He LOVED this game.
Each video lesson is only about 10-15 minutes long. That means that your kids will have time to complete the worksheets as well as complete their everyday math program. Being that this program is a supplement, having short lessons is huge. Every homeschooler knows that there are many programs out there but fitting them all in just can’t happen. That means we need to pick and choose what will work best for our kids, in the limited amount of time we have. This program seems to know that, and makes sure that the lessons are short to help them fit into your already busy life.
This program challenges kids to start thinking outside the normal math box. The way the lessons are structured, building on each other, allows the kids to be able to meet the challenges presented to them. With two different levels to choose from (3/4 and 5/6), all kids are able to start and learn at whatever level works best for them.
Algebra for Breakfast is great to help get the kids out of their normal math routine. It gets them thinking in terms of problem solving. If they are able to be confident in this program it will carry over to their regular math program. In the few short weeks we have had access to this program I have already seen an improvement in my kids confidence in math. They seem to be more willing to attempt problems that before they would shy away from.
Brings Fun into Math
Besides all the learning that is happening by using this program, my kids are starting to enjoy math again. Honestly, we had gotten into a routine with school and when time is short some of the fun activities get put aside. Educational games was one of them. This program helped to bring back games to our school day. The kids are happier and learning more. Now when I say it’s time for math I don’t hear kids whining. That alone makes this homeschool momma happy.
