Homeschooling is amazing with how much flexibility we are able to have in our lessons. Not only how we teach, but what we teach. My oldest never really liked art projects but my two youngest sure do. At the end of last school year we sat down as a family and talked about how the school year went, what they liked and didn’t, and what ideas they had to for the next school year. The first thing out of both of my younger two’s mouths was, “ We want more art.”
Now, I am not an artist. I am not a designer. Don’t get me wrong, I love art projects, as long as someone else has come up with the idea and given me great directions on how to duplicate what they have done. So how was I, the very much non-artist in the family, suppose to add art to our school days? I did a bunch of research and found several curriculums that would teach our kids the basics of art, but most of what I found required workbooks or in-depth lessons on the history of art. Now all of that is great, if that is what you are looking for. I on the other hand was looking for something to add more art projects into our school days. After quite a bunch of research I found what seemed to be too easy, and cheap…Home Art Studio.
So what is Home Art Studio and how is it so easy and cheap? Great question! Home Art Studio is a series of 6 DVDS with art lessons, taught by an enthusiastic art teacher. These lessons are so easy to follow along with and have taught my kiddos so much. They look forward to art class every week. All that is needed from me is to get out the art supplies and turn on the DVD. We are able to pause the DVD anytime the kids need more time, or need to re-watch something.
- The lessons are creative, fun, challenging, at their level, and diverse.
- Each DVD has printable lesson plans with supply lists.
- Covers a year of art curriculum per DVD!
- Each DVD costs only $29.99, however you can get it cheaper if you buy more than one DVD at a time (more on that later).
- All the DVDs have a unique theme. What is great about this is that in 6 years of art instruction, they will not be repeating any projects!
- She tries to build on what they have learned in previous lessons, as well as introducing art history when it fits.
She has put a grade level on each DVD, but please do not let that deter you. Before we started I contacted her on Facebook, and got some advice on where to start my kiddos. This year we have a fifth grader and a second grader (per-say), so which DVD should I pick? Her answer was to go with the 3rd DVD, as that would be a challenge to the second grader (but do-able) and cover the basics for the fifth grader that he would have missed by starting the program later on in elementary school, but still be fun. I was a bit nervous about the whole having a grade on the DVD and my kiddos seeing it. Turns out it wasn’t a big deal. I explained what the teacher said and just put the DVD in. They both had so much fun, it didn’t matter!

What about art supplies? If you are not an artist, like myself, just the thought of going through a huge list of supplies and finding just the right ones at an art store could make you go crazy. No worries! She has partnered with Jerry’s Artarama to put together art supply kits for each DVD. I purchased the set that was needed for the 3rd DVD and am very happy with the quality of the art supplies. These are not just basic school art supplies. The kids get to have real grown-up art supplies, and you get to save money. Now, you do not have to buy these kits. You can go week to week buying the supplies you need, however for myself that is just too much work. Getting it all at once was the answer to making this art curriculum, that much easier to work with.
So now the fun part. How to get your own copies of these wonderful DVDs. Like I said before, each DVD costs $29.99, but through the links below you can get a HUGE savings by buying more than one DVD at a time.
3 pack bundle (any 3 you choose) for $49.48, which is a 45% savings!
6 pack bundle for $89.97, which is a 50% savings!
