Today I get to bring you another review of an art program. We were blessed to be able to review the Entire Level 1 program from ArtAchieve . What is offered by ArtAchieve is not your ordinary art program. What they offer goes beyond art. So let’s jump into the review so you can decide if working with ArtAchieve might just be the tool you have needed for your own kids.
So what does this Art program offer you?
Beyond the actual art lessons, that we will get to in a minute, this program also offers you many, many cross connections into other subjects. Each of the art projects the kids and hopefully you will be working on are based off some item from around the world. The kids get to see the item that he based the project on. Doing this opens a door to learning.
Now kids can explore.
The country that item came from.
What it’s history is.
The music from the time period.
Books that tell of the culture.
Poems about the character in the item.
Learning about their habitat for science.
And so much more!
Below is a screenshot from ArtAchieve, of one art project’s cross curricular activity ideas.
With so many ideas given to expand on the art lessons, you truly can use art as a base for developing many, many unit studies.
So by now I am guessing you are curious about how ArtAchieve teaches art right?
Once you have purchased a lesson or level you hop on the computer and log into your lesson/s. From there you select a lesson and watch the video. Mr. Hofland starts each lesson with a relaxation technique to get the kids (and you) ready for art. Personally, my kids and I thought this was very strange but I get what his goal is. The point is to get the kids (and you) focused on art and nothing else. He also encourages there to be soft music playing through the art process. We LOVED this. The music and art combined really gives a relaxing atmosphere for art to truly be enjoyed. Through the whole video Mr. Hofland walks kids through the project, step by step. He encourages the video to be paused at any point so the kids really are drawing with him.
With how he breaks down the drawing into such small steps, even what looks complicated at first is manageable for kids. Over and over again when we started a project I would hear, there is no way I can do that Mom! However as we got started they realized they could draw…AND…it was FUN. One of the comments my 5th/6th grader (Cody) told me was that he loves how creative he gets him to think about his drawings. Mr. Hofland goes beyond just drawing a picture. He shows the kids how to be creative by decorating their drawings. How using different kinds of lines will make their art work stand out as their own. That obviously stuck with Cody. Cody has always loved to draw. He has had a doodle pad on his desk for years. It is not uncommon for me to check in on him and find him doodling away. A lot of his drawings are amazing, however, he never has gone beyond the act of drawing something. His drawings are just that, drawings without color added. Now with Mr. Hofland’s teaching I believe I am going to find him decorating those drawings more often now.
All of ArtAchieve’s lessons build upon each other. So, if you are new to drawing or have not had any drawing lessons, Mr. Hofland suggest you start with the free lesson on Simple Lines.
