This question has been asked of me several times over the years. I have answered it many ways but have found the best approach is to answer the question, with a question. Usually, when someone is asking, they have been thinking about homeschooling for a while but are lost as to if they can actually do what needs to be done and if their kids will succeed. I honestly believe that everyone can homeschool. Not that everyone will have the time, but everyone has the ability to educate their own children. Why? Well you know your kids best. You know their strengths and weaknesses. You know what sets them off and what settles them down. God has given us parents the high responsibility of raising our kids. Even if you haven’t thought about it, you have already been educating your kids.
How have you been educating your kids? Here are a few examples.
- How to hold a spoon
- Potty Training
- How to ride a bike
- How to tie shoes
- The right way to behave in a restaurant
- Saving up for a wanted toy
You are probably thinking those situations are so different from teaching right? Well hold on because I did say I answer the question with a question. So knowing that everyone can educate their kids, I simply answer their question, with this question.
What would you picture as a perfect school day?
This question alone has allowed me to branch off into different areas of homeschooling with whatever might help that person. There are many ways of educating kids. The question is what way do you see as best for your kids. Depending on what way you think would work best for you and your kids depends on how you could go ahead researching. Since I do not know how you would answer this question, I will go ahead and answer it as I have for so many other parents.
How does Your Perfect School Day Look?
- Student copying notes from a whiteboard?
- A table covered in art projects?
- Cuddle time on a couch reading with the kids?
- Students independently working away on a computer?
No matter what way you see a school day going, you can make it happen by homeschooling. Some people really want a more traditional education for their kids. For them, there are many curriculums to choose from that guide a parent through all the lessons, with workbooks for the kids to complete. If you are a huge reader, and picture snuggling up on the couch looking over lots of books to learn together with the kids, there are curriculums for you as well. If you and your kids love crafting and making things, there are curriculums built as hands-on unit studies. If you picture the kids working independently while you work from home, or take care of other things around the house there are online classes or software the kids can take or use. If you really want the kids to have a “real” teacher experience, there are many homeschool co-ops that will give the kids that classroom feeling.
Know that homeschooling isn’t what it use to be. There are a plethora of resources out there to help guide parents through homeschooling. Just like when you were getting ready to potty train your kids, you might have asked the doctor or some friends for some advice. Am I right? Well, homeschooling your kids is no different. The question is not, can I actually homeschool, it is how can I make homeschooling work for us. If you are willing to take the leap of faith and guide your kids through their scholastic studies, there is always a way. So, by answering the question of what your perfect school day looks like, you will have a direction of where to start looking for answers. You don’t have to do this alone. Here at Faithfilled Chaos we want to be there for you, and help you on your journey. If you have a question that we have not answered, please reach out to us.
