Captain Absolutely, a new book by Focus on the Family is for sure a keeper. When this book came up for review my 8-year-old son went crazy. The cover alone got him interested but to hear that this super, cool looking comic book would also teach some Bible truths got him hooked. At such a young age he really has a passion for following Christ. However, getting material for his age range that speaks to him can be a challenge. So besides his excitement, I was smiling knowing he would not just enjoy this book but be filled spiritually. So let’s dig into this review and see if this book might be something that would work for your family.
As soon as the Captain Absolutely package arrived, my 8-year-old, Hayden, was mesmerized. Right out of the package I was shocked, in a great way. The pictures on their website just do not give this book any justice. The book is much bigger than we thought it would be, and the pages are almost a glossy finish which makes the images seem to pop off the page. It truly does look and feel like a much more expensive book than what is being charged. Below is a picture of the book next to a pretty well know book, The Giving Tree, just to give you an idea of Captain Absolutely’s size, along with a full-page spread.
As for the content, we were not disappointed there either. The book brings you though a typical superhero story from before becoming one through the challenges a superhero faces. However, this book really seems to hit many age levels. While my 8-year-old was engrossed in reading this during his silent reading time, and honestly any other time he could get some quiet to read, I found myself sucked into the story too when I picked it up to read for this review. Besides the typical superhero story there is a lot of humor sprinkled in to get even an adult giggling.
Along with the storyline of a superhero and some humor this book is constantly sprinkling in lots of Bible truths for kids (and adults) to think about. When these truths are shared, there are Bible references listed so kids can look into what is being talked about more in their own Bible.
As a homeschool parent I am thoroughly impressed with how well this book has helped to spark the love of reading in my young kiddo. As a Christian I love that this has helped to keep my son’s flame of faith going strong. While we just used this book for silent reading time, if you are so inclined you could easily create character lessons using what is taught in this book. Another idea would be to assign the bible verses listed in the book to your kid to look up and copy for handwriting and Bible. Because this book really is a pretty easy read, I love that it can get a young kid so excited about reading. The fun of this book takes all the work of reading and hides it through the use of color, illustrations and humor. If your kid doesn’t like reading, this would be a great way to help them learn to love reading.
