Believe it or not but the holidays are right around the corner. As a Christian I can say that the one holiday that is up for big debate is Halloween. Some are set against it, others dive right in to the festivities while others find a balance. We have always been the find the balance kind of family. What do I mean by that? Our kids love to dress up, however we have put restrictions on what they can dress up as. Nothing scary, dark or evil. Superheroes, favorite book characters and career uniforms are all on the okay list of choices. We also do go trick or treating, but only around our local area while it is still early in the evening. Any house that is decorated in a scary, dark or evil way is skipped. For us the balance comes with putting ourselves out there in the community. Showing others that while some may have known this day for evil, us as Christians can turn it for good.
You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. Genesis 50:20 (NIV)
As for if we hand out candy, the answer is a BIG yes. The reason besides the fun of it all is the fact that we get to be smiling Christian faces to our neighborhood on a night that could be seen as evil. We are able to show the community that we care about them. That by our decorations we are having fun in a positive way. While we have not done this every year, another way that we can be the light in the darkness is by stuffing Bible tracts in the goody bags we hand out. Who knows if the message we send along with them might be the only time that child hears about God in a positive light. One Halloween tract, Is There Anything Better Than Candy- Box-Tract , we have recently found is by Let the Little Children Come. This tract goes beyond just the basic mini booklet styles that are so often associated with Bible tracts. They have created a 3D candy box tract shaped as a pumpkin.
These truly are so adorable that any person, young or old, will be intrigued by them.
Small enough to not take up tons of room in kids trick or treat bags yet large enough to hold several pieces of candy.
Ultimately they have the incredible gospel message to share with those who open up this charming pumpkin.
After getting my hands on these adorable pumpkins I had a bunch of ideas running through my head of how we could use them besides handing them out to trick or treaters. Here are my top 4 choices. With some imagination I’m sure you can come up with some more creative ideas.
Drop off to your children’s church classroom the Sunday before Halloween.
We are part of a homeschool co-op. These would make a fun treat to hand out the last co-op day before Halloween.
Our church holds a Halloween alternative party on Halloween night for community members. These would make a great party favor.
Hand out to your small group members to get them thinking about how they can be sharing the gospel message this Halloween.
So while I am not sure just yet what we will be doing with these tracts, I can definitely tell you that they will be handed out into many people’s hands. God only knows, but just maybe our effort to show others the gospel message might pay off. This tract’s message might be just what they needed to hear to cross the line of faith and decide to follow Christ.
