Given the title of this review, this is one I needed to hand over to hubby to handle. He worked with our boys through this kit and has written the review himself, for you. So, without further adieu, here is my Hubby’s review…
My wife who is part of Homeschool Review Crew let me know about Manhood Journey Father’s Starter Kit by City on a Hill Studio. With being the father of three boys, I was obviously curious about it. I have been looking for the right product to help disciple my boys for a while. I have found the usual books and DVDs but the way that this was laid out, I was compelled.
I am wary of Christian products in this space because it seems like anyone can slap a “Christian” label on a box and people with no discernment will run to it. When I saw that one of the ministry partners for the Manhood Journey was Trail Life USA, I was happy. Then after I opened the box (we will discuss that later in detail) and much to my bigger surprise, the book “Wise Guys: Unlocking Hidden Wisdom From The Men Around You” was endorsed by Dr. R. Albert Mohler who serves as the President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is a Ligonier Ministries teaching fellow so my theological fears were put to bed pretty quickly.
Finally the big day and the big box arrived. I really thought that the layout and graphics of the box were done very well.
The box contained the following products:
- Manhood Journey DVD;
- A copy of Kent Evans’ book Wise Guys: Unlocking Hidden Wisdom From The Men Around You;
- A copy of the Manhood Journey: Embarking group guide;
- A copy of the Manhood Journey: Embarking 1 on 1 guide; and
- 10 Manhood Journey Maprochures.
The small group study starts around the idea of the five “big rocks” which they say are the five key areas that are needed for Biblical manhood. The study title for the kit we received for this review is called “Embarking” since this is the first study of the Manhood Journey series. There are a total of six study areas that they make kits for and the enclosed DVD in the kit gives you an overview of each one of the study areas.
The group guide is laid out very well and there is very little work on your part to incorporate this in a small group setting. The one problem I did run into is that each lesson in the group guide was designed for a small group with various dads and sons so some of the sections such as asking other dads questions could not be accomplished since I reviewed this with me and two of my boys. Since it was laid out like this, we actually skipped a bit of each lesson.
The best part that I liked about the Manhood Journey Father’s Starter Kit was the fact that they included what they call a “1 on 1” guide. In all the other small groups that I have lead, I have never seen this concept in a small group curriculum. It is a genius way to not only enforce the principles that were taught and talked about during the small group session but it is a great way for a dad to connect to his son one on one.
Overall, I whole heartedly endorse this product to assist dads with discipling their boys. My only caveat is that it would be best used as part of a group of other men and boys. There is something about going through it with other men and getting their viewpoints from their life experiences. You will have an opportunity with the 1 on 1 guide to connect with your boys.
