For years now I have been heading out for Black Friday shopping with a group of girlfriends, and loving every minute of it. All this started with a need to save money any way we could. I have sat in many lines for countless hours just to save some money. The past few years however, our Black Friday shopping has started much earlier. So much earlier that it has begun on Thanksgiving night!
Crazy, I know. So each year my friends and I talk about if it is worth it. Is going shopping on Thanksgiving day worth it? Do you sacrifice time with family and friends for shopping? We throw out the reasons why the stores should respect Thanksgiving and give everyone, including the employees of the stores, time to visit with family. But in the end we always seem to come back to going shopping. All of the reasons why shopping shouldn’t be on Thanksgiving are of course still true, but when it comes down to me handing out our hard-earned money, I want to hand over as little of it as possible. Don’t think that we give up on Thanksgiving. Oh no, that does not happen. We just change things around a bit to fit. There, now you can relax knowing that I really am not all that shallow. I LOVE Thanksgiving!
With all the reasons why shopping on Thanksgiving should be banned, there is some good news with shopping on Thanksgiving night. We don’t have to stay up all through the night. Which honestly, as I’ve gotten older (shhh don’t tell anyone) is so much harder anyway. This way, we get to go shopping, spend time with friends, maybe even have a bite to eat, but be back home at a reasonable hour. Our family has worked all this out, and we are able to have our shopping and eat too.
So how do we make Thanksgiving AND shopping happen? Our family is celebrating Thanksgiving on Friday instead. Who said you have to get stuffed on Thursday? Why not Friday? I say who cares what day it is, as long as we are able to take time out of our busy lives and enjoy spending time with family, being thankful for all God has blessed us with.
For us this year, Hubby has to work on Thanksgiving so the boys and I will be hanging out during the day, watching the parade on TV, cleaning up a bit and getting some cooking done. James will be out of work early enough for me to take off with the girlfriends for some much-needed girl time and shopping. The boys get to stay home with Daddy and watch “manly” movies with lots of homemade popcorn. Everyone wins! Then early morning Friday, I will head out with our oldest for a quick trip to the local music store so he can spend his own hard-earned money (he spend all summer mowing lawns to make this happen) on an electric guitar. Then back home to cook and spend the day visiting with my Dad and over eating on lots of delicious goodies.
I pray that your Thanksgiving plans go well. That you enjoy lots of yummy food, visits with family and friends, and time to truly thank God for all he has done for you. If you are able to fit it in, enjoy some shopping as well.
