First impressions are not always the truth. What am I talking about? I am talking about seeing a curriculum on a shelf or online and after looking it over thinking that it probably wouldn’t be a good fit for your kids, only to later find out that it actually is a great fit for your tween (4th – 6th grade) kids. This is something I recently was happily surprised by while working on the Weave Your Word in Me – Part 1 review by Kid Niche Christian Books. So let’s dive into this review and see for yourself why I was surprised by it and how you might be too.
Being Honest here, I was very happy with the Bible curriculum we already had so when this review came up we were not too excited about trying it. Why you ask? At first glance it seemed to be a lot of fill in the blank worksheets with many different verses to look up each day. While overall that seems fine, for my hyper kid it looked like too much writing. For my Dyslexic kid it looked like too much reading. However we dove into this review hesitant but with an open mind.
Day one of this review started out with my kiddos upset that we were trying something new. They really liked their current Bible curriculum. I saw a lot of long faces and huffing which ended with me saying I know I know, but we are going to give this our best shot and see what happens. Can you do that? They both agreed and we dove into this curriculum. I was so surprised to see how quickly their long faces turned to smiles as we got to our first verse to look up. Since we were doing this curriculum together I had all the kids hold their bibles with both hands on the covers and on the count of 3 we all looked up the verse as quickly as we could. The first person to find the verse was the winner of that round.
We read the verse and then tackled filling in the blanks based on what the verse said. While my kids could think of several answers to fit in the blanks it was a fun challenge for them to find the correct answer in their Bible. I was so shocked! Here was my Dyslexic kid hunting down correct answers by reading. Here was my hyper kid sitting down and focused. How could this be? Obviously they were getting something new and exciting out of this curriculum that I never in a million years would have guessed.
Then once we finished completing the worksheet I had them turn to the TV. I had hooked up our computer to the TV so I could show them both at the same time the info from the Kid Niche website. Why you ask? Well on top of the worksheets there are many additional fun things to get the kids excited about the Bible online. For each worksheet there are between 1-3 different activities you can add into your Bible study. For the first worksheet we read about a childhood memory of two best friends with the last names Potter and Clay, and got to listen to the song Have Thine own Way Lord by Jonny Cash. Then we watched a video of someone working with clay on a pottery wheel. Both of these extras tied into what we had been learning about. Now my kids want to try their own hands at making pottery. Ironically (or I call it God), the next time we were at Goodwill we found a kids pottery wheel, new in the box! We still need to pick up some clay but the kids are excited to try it out.
Each Day we worked on Weave Your Word in Me – Part 1 the kids got more and more excited. They wanted to see who could get to the verse quicker, who could find the correct answer first, what words they could add to the prayers to make them their own, and what extras we might be doing. My kids were excited about Bible time, more than they had been in a long time. Sure our other Bible Curriculum was great. They were learning tons and seemed to enjoy our time together but this curriculum has put that twinkle back in their eyes for God’s word.
